The government has decided to allocate satellite communications (Satcom) spectrum administratively. Previously, Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani and Airtel Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal had requested the government to allocate spectrum through auction.
Following the government’s decision, Starlink and SpaceX owner Elon Musk committed to providing satellite broadband services in India. He provides this information in his X post. Previously, Musk had opposed the suggestions of the two Indian businessmen.
Scindia says-Government will decide spectrum cost
Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Tuesday that allocation of spectrum for satellite services will not be through auction but will be done through administrative means and the cost will be decided by the government.
Eutelsat OneWeb powered by Bharti Airtel is also preparing to launch satellite communication services in India in the future.
Starlink can provide satellite broadband service anywhere in the world
Starlink operates a global network of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and provides space-based broadband connectivity to many countries. The company has the ability to deliver satellite broadband services directly to smartphones anywhere in the world.
Starlink benefits from government decision
Starlink will have an easier time obtaining GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communications Satellite Services) license from Indian authorities. After obtaining the license, the company will be able to launch satellite broadband services in India.
GMPCS will become the third company to receive authorization
Starlink is a subsidiary of SpaceX. After obtaining the license, it will be able to provide satellite broadband, voice and messaging services to individuals and organizations in India. If approved, Starlink will become the third company to receive GMPCS authorization.
Airtel and Jio have been granted this license
Prior to this, Bharti Airtel-backed companies OneWeb and Reliance Jio had received licenses to provide satellite services. On the other hand, Jeff Bezos’ company Amazon has also applied for a license from the telecom ministry, but the government is yet to discuss it.
Services also require approval from IN-SPACE.
Satellite communication service providers also need approval from India’s autonomous space regulator, the Indian Space Regulatory Authority of India (IN-SPACE). After this, the company will have to wait for spectrum allocation from the Department of Transportation.
The government is awaiting recommendations from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on how to allocate spectrum or radio frequencies for satellite services in the country. However, recommendations are unlikely to be made until TRAI finds a new chairman.
How will the Internet reach you via satellite?
- Satellites make internet coverage possible anywhere on the planet. Satellite networks provide users with high-speed, low-latency network coverage. Latency is the time it takes to transmit data from one point to another.
- Starlink kits include Starlink antennas, Wi-Fi routers, power cords, and mounting tripods. For high-speed Internet, this antenna must be kept in the open air. Starlink’s app, available on iOS and Android, handles setup and monitoring.
