The junior doctor began a hunger strike on October 5.
The hunger strike by junior doctors in Kolkata to protest against the rape and murder of a female doctor ended on the 17th. Meanwhile, doctors also withdrew a health strike planned for Tuesday. The team of doctors held discussions with CM Mamata for about 2 hours at the Nabana Secretariat on Monday evening.
The junior doctor has been on a hunger strike since October 5, demanding justice in the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor. They also demand changes to the country’s health care structure. Junior doctors will organize a mass meeting on October 26 at RG Kar Hospital.
On October 19, West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant invited doctors to meet CM Mamata today. The meeting time was set for 45 minutes, but the meeting lasted 2 hours.
On October 20, CM Mamata Banerjee called for an end to the fast. In the meantime, he said most of the doctors’ requests have been met.
On Sunday, junior doctors had said fasting would not be stopped ahead of the meeting.
Health services should not be affected Mantha has said that everyone has the right to protest, but medical services should not be affected. It is not possible to delete everyone in a department at the same time. We’ve eliminated DHS and DME, so get beyond politics and get back to work.
The junior doctors have been on hunger strike for the past 15 days, demanding justice for trainee doctors and improved medical facilities. So far, six doctors have been admitted due to ill health and eight others are on indefinite fast. Doctors have given the state government until October 21 to take concrete steps to address the issue.
Mamta says: Is it right for doctors to decide who should be removed? Mamata Banerjee also asked doctors to end her fast and meet her on Monday. She has said, “I have removed the Commissioner of Police (CP), the Director of Medical Education (DME) and the Director of Health Services (DHS), but I cannot remove the entire department.”
He asked if it was logical for you to decide which official to remove? Some needs require policy formulation, and the government will fully cooperate, but we do not believe that doctors should tell the government what to do.
Chief Secretary Manoj Pant met the hunger-striking doctors and tried to convince them to end the strike.
The doctors had earlier made 5 demands, and the government met 3 of them…and then went on a hunger strike. Junior doctors went on strike for 42 days from August 10 to September 21 over the rape and murder. The doctors had earlier made five demands to the government. Among them, the government accepted three requests. CM Mamata has assured to consider two more demands and conditions.
The doctors have since ended their strike. He has returned to work at the hospital. On September 27, three doctors and three nurses were beaten at Sagor Dutta Hospital. The doctors were angry and launched another strike on October 1.
On October 4, junior doctors called off the strike but continued to strike. We are returning to work as a large number of patients are facing problems in government hospitals, he said. However, he has issued an ultimatum to the state government within 24 hours. Thereafter he began to fast.
