West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant and Home Minister Nandini Chakraborty visited the protest site where junior doctors were fasting.
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called on doctors who were fasting to protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College to stop fasting. He said most of the doctors’ demands had been met but rejected calls to oust the health minister.
“Everyone has the right to protest, but health services should not be affected,” Mantha said. “It is not possible to sack everyone in a department at once.” We’ve eliminated DHS and DME, so get beyond politics and get back to work.
The junior doctors have been on hunger strike for the past 15 days, demanding justice for trainee doctors and improved medical facilities. So far, six doctors have been admitted due to ill health and eight others are on indefinite fasting. Doctors have asked the state government to take concrete steps by October 21 to address the issue.
In West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas, junior doctors held a march to protest against the rape and murder of RG Kar.

Mamta says: Is it right for doctors to decide who should be removed? Mamata Banerjee also asked doctors to end her fast and meet her on Monday. “I have removed the chief of police (CP), the director of medical education (DME) and the director of health services (DHS), but I cannot remove the entire department,” she said.
He asked: “Is it logical for you to decide which official should be removed?” Some demands require policy formulation and the government will fully cooperate, but we do not believe that doctors should order the government to do something.
Chief Secretary Manoj Pant met the hunger-striking doctors and tried to convince them to end the strike.
Mamta tells doctor – forget my position and treat me as sister. Mamta asked doctors to understand their responsibilities and note that health services in the state are being affected by this strike. ‘People depend on you for treatment,’ he said. Where will the poor go? They receive free treatment at government hospitals. Please forget my status and consider me your sister. Your request is legitimate, but you should serve the public.
Doctors across the state will go on strike on October 22 The protesting doctors said that if their demands are not met, all medical staff across the state will go on strike on October 22. In addition to this, the doctors are planning to organize a large rally on Sunday, October 20.
The doctors had earlier made 5 demands, and the government met 3 of them…and then went on a hunger strike. Junior doctors went on strike for 42 days from August 10 to September 21 over the rape and murder. The doctors had earlier made five demands to the government. Among them, the government accepted three requests. CM Mamata has assured to consider two more demands and conditions.
The doctors have since ended their strike. He has returned to work at the hospital. On September 27, three doctors and three nurses were beaten at Sagor Dutta Hospital. The doctors were angry and went on strike again on October 1.
On October 4, junior doctors called off the strike but continued to strike. We are returning to work as a large number of patients are facing problems in government hospitals, he said. However, he has issued an ultimatum to the state government within 24 hours. Thereafter he began to fast.
